The campuses were chosen because of an already established program where CASFV facilitators work with students in health class once a month on curriculum relating to gender roles, dating violence and violence prevention.

Stephanie Karr, executive director of the CASFV, said a solution to youth violence is not something that comes easy."There are lots of nuances and factors that need to be thoughtfully considered," Karr said. They will coordinate with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Child Guidance Center to provide the right care to a student who has been referred for services.

Teen-dating violence has been referred to as a hidden epidemic.

An estimated one in three teenagers experience some form of abuse in dating relationships. The reasons behind the violence are complex, and more than can be covered in one article.

A report published by Statistics Canada and released in 2015, titled “Family violence in Canada: A statistical profile, 2013,” states that in 2013 there were police reports citing 87,820 victims of family violence in Canada. The CASFV will also coordinate a public education campaign and will use social media, outreach events and advertisements to share information on available services with parents and the community.Officials with the collaborative said one of the most important components of the program will be mentoring and encouraging boys to become advocates for women and against dating violence and sexual assault.Teen-dating violence, on the other hand, involves real or threatened acts of physical, sexual or emotional abuse that is committed by an adolescent against a current or former dating partner.Definitions for both domestic violence and teen-dating violence may differ in wording, but the meanings remain the same.
